Dr Sutherland trained as a synthetic organic chemist (PhD Manchester University, PDRA MIT) and has over 20 years’ experience of synthetic organic chemistry. His research centres on using synthetic organic chemistry as a tool with which to develop new materials. Bespoke monomers are designed and synthesised before being introduced into polymerisation reactions, or pre-formed polymer scaffolds, to generate materials with properties tailored for wide-ranging applications in fields ranging from cellular delivery and bioimaging to organic electronics molecular recognition, combinatorial chemistry and high-throughput screening.
